What the Poor People’s Campaign Was The Poor People’s Campaign was a movement started in 1968 to fight poverty and economic inequality in the United States. It was organized by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) . The campaign focused on helping poor people of all races who were struggling to meet basic needs like food, housing, jobs, and healthcare. Dr. King believed that civil rights were not only about voting and laws, but also about economic justice .
