Harlem Renaissance, 1920s The Harlem Renaissance was a powerful cultural movement that took place during the 1920s and early 1930s. Centered in the Harlem neighborhood of New York City, it became a celebration of Black art, music, literature, and identity. It was a time when African American creativity flourished, and Black voices were heard in new and exciting ways This movement grew as many African Americans moved from the southern United States to northern cities during the Great Migration.
