The Chicago Freedom Movement (1965-1967)

  The Chicago Freedom Movement was one of the most important civil rights campaigns outside the South. Led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), and local Chicago organizers, this movement focused on ending unfair housing practices and segregation in northern cities. Even though Chicago didn’t have the same Jim Crow laws as the South, Black families still faced discrimination. Many were forced to live in overcrowded neighborhoods, pay higher rents, and were denied the chance to buy homes in certain areas.
