Their participation showed courage and determination during a time when freedom and equality were not guaranteed for everyone. At the beginning of the war, Black Americans were often discouraged from joining the Continental Army. However, as the need for soldiers increased, policies changed. Free Black men were allowed to enlist, and some laborer's men were promised freedom in exchange for military service.
