Red Lining

Redlining was a system used many years ago to sort neighborhoods into different color‑coded maps. These maps were created by officials who wanted to label areas based on how “safe” they believed it was to give out home loans. Instead of looking at real facts about families or houses, the maps often judged neighborhoods by who lived there. This meant many Black communities were marked with the lowest rating, even when the homes were well cared for and the families were hardworking. These labels shaped how neighborhoods grew for decades. When a neighborhood was marked in red, banks and lenders often refused to give home loans to the people who lived there. This made it very hard for families to buy homes, fix their houses, or build wealth over time. Even families who saved money and had good credit were turned away simply because of the area they lived in.
